AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Texas homeowners pay the highest insurance premiums in the United States but officials say it's possible those costs may be coming down soon.

Right now, the state averages out those premiums. With the threats of hurricanes on the gulf coast and hail here, statewide, those costs go up.

State Representative John Smithee said work is being done now in Austin to bring those premiums down.

"We've got to get these rates down, either through judicial process which is going on right now and the commission has challenged those rates or else working with the market in terms of trying to find out why those market forces are there, " said Smithee

Florida and Louisiana used to be the most expensive states for insurance premiums. Now, they've formed their own insurance companies, so they're no longer included when ranking U.S. premium costs.
