CHILDRESS, TEXAS -- A 74-year-old man was killed early Monday morning after police say a vehicle struck him after he pulled over on a highway shoulder near Childress.
Texas Department of Public Safety said 74-year-old Tom Lewis of Childress was pronounced dead just before 6:00 a.m. Monday. DPS said he pulled over his 2007 Ford Explorer on US 287 eight miles west of Childress to check for mechanical problems.
That's when police said a 2009 Peterbuilt truck driven by Samuel Cook of Sulphur Springs swerved onto the shoulder and struck the back left corner of the Explorer. The vehicle then hit Lewis who was kneeling outside of the driver's side.
