CANYON, TEXAS -- Racial profiling has been an issue among our law enforcement community in this country for years.

It's something our leaders want to make sure they have a handle on.

Monday in Canyon, the Chief of Police presented his city's annual racial profiling report to the City Commission.

Chief Dale Davis presented the report required by law, and it appears that for Canyon, racial profiling from police officers isn't an issue at all.

They gather the data in compliance with a recently-enacted state law.

In order to do that, any time an officer makes a stop, equipment on his vehicle is activated, so the stop can be recorded.

"In the event a traffic citation be it a warning, or regular citation is issued, that officer will gather all the racial profiling data that is required by law," said Davis.

By law, the report must be completed by March first of each year and must be submitted to the state and to the governing body where the report was generated.

"The Texas Legislature has put this all into place to police the police."

Davis says while Canyon may not have problems with profiling, that doesn't mean it isn't happening nationwide.

"How widespread that is, I don't have any idea, but it is of such importance that for them to police the police, they have required us to collect this data."

There are two types of reporting, tier one and tier two, and Canyon falls into the tier one category agency because, "We took advantage of funding that was provided by the Texas Department of Public Safety, so we could put recording devices, cameras in our automobiles which gave us an exemption with Tier two reporting."

Davis says the data shows the City of Canyon made 1,815 stops and factoring in sex, ethnicity, and origin and he says thankfully, there was nothing he feels that was too glaring.

Davis also said he is pleased with the numbers, and the Canyon Police Department has already started collecting data for next year's report
