CLOVIS, N.M. -- Despite its father passing away about a year ago, a baby girl giraffe was born at the Clovis Zoo Wednesday night.
The baby giraffe's father, Jay, died back in February 2011 after falling on ice, reported the Clovis News Journal.
If you're wondering how a baby was born almost a year later, that's because a giraffe's gestation period lasts 14-14.5 months, according to Nature-Wildlife.com.
"Looks like he took care of business right away," Clovis Mayor Gayla Brumfield told the Clovis News Journal.
Zoo officials, according to the newspaper, didn't suspect the pregnancy until about two months ago. They weren't completely sure until just the past few days.
Jael, the mother, was apparently just as surprised. The zoo said she seemed surprised and didn't know what was happening.
"We are very excited about the news" said Mayor Brumfield. "This is very early days and our zoo staff are doing an outstanding job in taking care of her through this initial period. I have been to visit her this morning and she is very beautiful."
The baby, who has yet to be named, will not be viewable to the public for several days.
"Our zoo staff did an incredible job in handling the birth last night and are taking care of the new baby" advised Bill Bizzell, Parks & Recreation Director. "The baby will not be available for public viewing for several days as she we acclimatize her into her new home."
