AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Kong Toy Drive at the Amarillo Panhandle Humane Society and Animal Control was a success, and now a peanut butter drive is making those toys even more enjoyable for shelter dogs.

Shelter workers put peanut butter inside the "indestructible" Kong toys and then freeze them.  The peanut butter is not bad for the animals- it actually attracts them to the toys.

Humane Society Executive Director Andrea Soliz said the toys play a big role in benefiting the animals.

"We're just filling the toys with it so that the dogs have interest," she stated.  "They chew on them, they play with them and it gives them something to do other than chewing on the fences, licking and causing sores or even fighting with each other.  And it makes them more adoptable and they show so much better."

The peanut butter drive is going on until Wednesday, but Soliz added both peanut butter and Kong toy donations will be accepted anytime.  The toys are sanitized after each animal has them, and Soliz said more toys will ensure the continuous flow of the treats to all the animals.

The Amarillo Panhandle Humane Society is located at 3501 S. Osage.
