AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Since 1990, the population of Amarillo has grown by about 33,000 people, to more than 190,000 citizens.

Wednesday, the Comprehensive Plan Implementation Advisory Committee met to talk about population trends and growth areas in Amarillo in recent years.

Kelly Shaw, Planning Director for the City of Amarillo says the main areas they've seen growth in are the northwest, southwest and southeast parts of town, areas we need to continue to protect for future development.

"Which of these areas are still undeveloped, that we can go out, be proactive and either annex or do development agreements or these kinds of things to protect these areas and allow us to grow that way in the future," said Shaw.

Shaw said Amarillo saw the most growth in the southeast parts of town, making up around 22 percent of the total population growth.
