AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The 1st Amarillo Area Scholastic Chess Tournament drew kids of all ages to Ascension Academy Saturday morning.
Kids in second grade all the way to twelfth grade competed in the tournament in hopes of winning a trophy. The tournament was divided into different sections so kids with different experience levels could participate.
Tournament sponsors said they would like to make the tournament an annual event.
"Chess is for everybody," Chess Tournament Sponsor Paula Davis said. "It's a fun game, it helps you in school. There are scholarships available for students who excel on Chess, so as they get closer to being seniors in high school they should really look into that."
Children from any area public or private school were invited to attend, and participation in the tournament met some of the requirements for the Boy Scout Merit Badge in Chess.
