AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Potter County commissioners met at court Monday and one of the issues discussed will protect victims of fire damage.

The court recognized the renewal of the proclamation from the governor certifying drought conditions and fire hazards for all of the Texas counties.

"In the event that we wind up with wildfires again this year, it paves the way for those people whose properties may be damaged to receive funding," Potter County Commissioner Joe Kirkwood stated.

The commissioners had also planned to hear a report on a proposed wind farm in Potter County, but the representative's flight was cancelled due to weather.  Kirkwood said the wind farm could eventually lead to lower taxes for the county.

"We are expecting a request for a tax abatement.  That's pretty standard in the industry.  That helps them to offset some costs while they actually go through the expenditures of building the wind farm and I think Potter County will consider that because we do want them here.  It's a benefit to our taxpayers."

According to Kirkwood, the commissioners will probably consider the wind farm as it could benefit the local economy.
