AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A juvenile is now behind bars after leading police on an early morning chase with a stolen pickup, police said.
The juvenile, whose name cannot be released, was booked into the Youth Center of the High Plains for auto theft and an outstanding juvenile directive to apprehend.
Police were investigating a stolen vehicle case in the 1600 block of North Iris at about 6:15 Friday morning when an officer spotted the stolen 2003 Dodge pickup traveling westbound on Amarillo Boulevard and North Bivins.
The pickup, according to police, had been left running in a driveway when it was stolen.
Police said after the pickup was spotted, it turned north on North Mirror and officers set spikes ahead of it, near 16th and Mirror.
An officer tried to stop the vehicle and it avoided the spikes. Another attempt to set up spikes was successful at 15th and North Highes. This time, the vehicle hit the spikes and the tires were deflated on the right side.
Police said the driver continued driving with damaged tired and rims. The vehicle continued driving southbound on Hughes to Southwest 3rd Street. It then went west to the area of 8th and South Forest where the juvenile abandoned the vehicle and ran on foot.
The juvenile left running on foot and officers caught him.
