If you see smoke in the air, it may be because of large controlled burns between Canyon and Hereford.

According to officials, controlled burns were planned for both Wednesday and Thursday in the area of Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

The first burn on Wednesday was scheduled to burn 500 acres and the one on Thursday is scheduled to burn 600 acres.

Refuge officials said the controlled burns were to reduce fuel loads and improve habitation.
