AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Board of Directors of the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission held their regular meeting Thursday.

Several items were on their agenda to discuss, including a change to the emergency notification system, and a federal grant to help better protect our cattle industry.

The meeting at 1:30 p.m. touched on several issues but one that stood out was a change to the "Resolve to be Ready" notification system.

It alerts you whenever there is something happening in the area. Right now, users will get notifications for a variety of things, which some say, can be overwhelming.

But at the end of July, users can be more selective of which alert's they'd like to have.

"The system will basically limit the number of emails, text messages going out to residents limit to whatever they want to receive but they won't be iodated with information that may not be necessarily important to their safety," said John Kiehl, PRPC Regional Service Director.

The Board also discussed a grant from the Homeland Security Department of $1.4 million.

That grant will be used to protect our cattle from any natural disasters and possible terrorism.

"The goal of this project is to make the industry move and it's an important industry to the Panhandle and it contributes mightly to our economy and is something that we certainly needs to be protected not only for the sake of the Panhandle but for the sake of the state and the nation," said Kiehl.
