Hundreds of girl scouts from around the Panhandle met at the Amarillo Civic Center Saturday afternoon.

They were celebrating the 100th Annual Girl Scout Day.

"In today's society, it's so important for them to have a path to go to," said girl scout troop leader Stacey Leinen. "You have girls that come from broken homes, it just keeps them on a path."

Several local organizations, like the Amarillo Museum of Art and the League of Women Voters, were there to teach the girls everything from color to nutrition.

They even had a mock presidential election.

The highest awards in girl scouts were given out, along with prizes for the girls who sold the most cookies.

Two girl scouts, both 10-years-old, said selling cookies was one of their favorite things about scouting.

"I like selling cookies," said Lauryn Hayes.

"It teaches you about saving money and spending it," finished her friend Saphira Laughter.

But they both agreed that making friends was their favorite thing about being a girl scout.

"You make new friends and help the community," said Hayes.

And Saturday, the community helped give back to the girls.
