JetBlue Captain Clayton Osbon made his first appearance in court early Monday morning. He has been in custody at The Pavilion since last Tuesday.

It was then that he forced a plane from New York to Las Vegas to make an unscheduled landing in Amarillo because of his erratic behavior.

Randall County DA James Farren says this first court date clarities what will come next.

"In almost any criminal legal proceeding in the United States, whether its at the federal level or state level, there is an initial appearance before a judge," said Farren. "This is where he will explain to the accused their rights and some of the procedures coming up."

Osbon is being charged with interference with a flight crew and attendants.

Farren says this is a felony offense that should not be taken lightly.

Osbon was taken to the Randall County Jail without bond. Randall County has contracts with different agencies, including the federal government, to house prisoners for them.

"If they have denied the defendant bond, yes, he will remain incarcerated until a judge either changes that ruling or the case goes to trial or is dismissed," said Farren.

A preliminary examination and detention hearing will be held this Thursday at 9:30am.
