Students and teachers: Should they be Facebook friends?

Schools across the nation are starting to develop and release new social media guidelines for teachers. But how are the risks of inappropriate contact balanced with the benefits of social media?

In an age where most teenagers are easily accessible on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, it's becoming more and more common for them to befriend teachers and other school officials.

A number of school staffers have been fired over the years because of inappropriate contact using Facebook. On the other hand, some teachers are saying social media can be extremely useful if used correctly.
