ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico Congressmen Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich are calling on the federal government to clean up hundreds of abandoned uranium mines on the Navajo Nation. The mines were built to supply uranium for the federal government's nuclear weapons program. They have sat dormant for decades.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Commercial construction permits are on the rise in Las Cruces. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the city issued 94 commercial building permits for new or addition projects with a valuation of $16.6 million from January through the end of March. That's the biggest total since the same period in 2008.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An analysis of grand jury reviews of police shootings in the Albuquerque area finds that the juries don't have the power to indict officers in the shootings. The Albuquerque Journal reports that grand juries are not instructed on possible criminal violations. Police Chief Ray Schultz says it may be time for the District Attorney to consider other options in order to ensure the public trusts the process.
LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - A 95-year-old driver was shaken up after his car jumped a parking lot curb and slammed into the windows of a Las Alamos McDonald's restaurant. Police tell the Los Alamos Monitor the driver apparently hit the gas instead of the brake, or his foot slipped. No one in the restaurant was injured.
