SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Immigration documents obtained by The Associated Press show that New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez' Mexican grandfather was lawfully admitted to the U.S. as a permanent resident and later became a citizen in 1942. Martinez says she was surprised to learn about the citizenship, but maintained that his status, citizen or not, didn't affect her political views.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A jury is scheduled to hear opening statements today in the trial of a man charged with killing a Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop in 2009. The trial of Michael Astorga in the death of Deputy James McGrane Jr. could be New Mexico's last death penalty trial, since it occurred before the state repealed the death penalty.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Santa Fe police have arrested the man they believe was caught on video shooting up a parked police speed-enforcement vehicle. Police tell the Santa Fe New Mexican that 63-year-old Scott Powell fled from officers trying to serve a search warrant this morning. He led police on a chase through downtown Santa Fe before being arrested.

ANDREWS, Texas (AP) - A Dallas-based company has begun dumping low-level radioactive waste into its new dump near the New Mexico state line. A spokesman for Waste Control Specialists says a small amount of medical waste from Texas was placed inside the disposal pit early today.
