Amarillo teen charged with multiple garage burglaries

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Randall County District Attorney's Office has accepted five felony charges for a 19-year-old accused of burglarizing multiple garages.

Colton Taylor Jones, 19, is charged with four felony charges of burglary of a habitation and a state jail felony charge of theft of a firearm.

Overnight on May 12, police said they were sent to a home in the 6900 block of Logan on a burglary in progress. The resident told police he heard his garage door open along with his dogs bark. After checking the garage, he found a man crouching behind a truck inside the garage, police said.

The man then fled, police said.

About an hour later, an officer who was responding to reports of auto burglaries in the 6300 block of Stoneham saw a white 1999 Dodge pickup pull out of an alley in the 699 block of Achieve. Inside the vehicle was a white male, police said.

After a license check, police said it showed an address on Wolfin.

Police stopped the pickup in the 6700 block of Thunder. Inside the vehicle was Jones along with a large amount of personal property, police said. The property included a case of energy drinks, a back pack, first aid kit, tools, a tool belt, a machete, a hatchet, a purse and other items, police said.

Also inside the vehicle, police said they saw broken glass. One of the auto burglaries being investigated was committed by breaking the window to enter.

Officers said they recovered a .380 caliber semi automatic handgun fron the pickup. Police said it was stolen from a vehicle parked inside the garage at the ho,e in the 8300 block of Paragon.

A purse inside the pickup was from the burglary of the garage in the 6000 block of Windham, police said.

Jones was booked into the Randall County Jail.

Police remind residents to remove garage door openers from vehicles left parked outside.
