AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Jurors deliberated only 30 minutes to determine the guilt in the Aggravated Robbery trial of Lorenzo Timothy Alonzo. Prosecutors used witnesses, video and audio from security cameras, and the defendants own confession as evidence.
May 4, 2011, Alonzo walked into the Sleep-In on I-40, inquiring about room rates from the hotel night clerk, Olaf Reyes. Alonzo produced a handgun and demanded money from the register. Reyes gave him the $250 that was in drawer.
Alonzo then fled on foot to a vehicle driven by Tiffani Mckay, his then-girlfriend. He ordered Mckay to drive to Roswell, New Mexico, where he threatened to kill her and made her begin to dig her own grave.
Officers from the Roswell Police Department separated Mckay from Alonzo and made the arrest of the Potter County warrant. Alonzo confessed to the motel robbery and a hotel robbery in Moore County.
RPD detectives also testified that Alonzo bore gang tattoos that affiliated him with the East Side Gang in Roswell, a division of the Sureno 13 gang.
Alonzo testified on his own behalf, stating a long history of family criminals and prior convictions of his own. He admitted that he was under indictment for robbery in the 69th Judicial District in Moore County.
In the punishment phase jurors deliberated for 45 minutes before handing down a verdict of 50 years within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice system and a fine of $10,000.
