AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Amarillo Animal Control is joining shelters all over the country in an event where no animals are euthanized for 24 hours.

The event will take place Monday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the municipal shelter located at 3501 S. Osage.

The Just One Day event is aimed at getting animal shelters across America to achieve the goal every shelter wants to get to attain.  Even if it just for one day, the founders of the event say the nation can essentially be no-kill, and have fewer animals in cages by the end of the day.

Amarillo Animal Control has taken it one step further- no animals have been put down since Friday.  This will ensure pet-seekers have plenty of fuzzy friends to choose from.

Along with not euthanizing any animals, the shelter, along with the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society, will adopt pets out at discounted prices.  Dogs, which can usually be adopted for $85, can be taken home for $42.50.  The normal price for cat adoptions will be lowered from $65 to $32.50.  Those prices include a spay or neuter, vaccinations and a microchip.  People who already own pets can get their dog or cat microchipped for a cheaper rate of $15.
