OK Police: 13-year-old boy was driving in crash that killed 19-year-old man

HOOKER, OKLA. -- A 19-year-old Liberal, Kan., man was killed on Thursday afternoon when the vehicle he was a passenger in struck a spray rig, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just after 4 p.m., Thursday four miles south and five miles east of Hooker at an uncontrolled intersection, OHP said.

According to the OHP, a 2009 John Deere self-propelled sprayer was traveling southbound at Mile 51. The sprayer was driven by 21-year-old Michael Wiebe of Hooker.

A 1997 Chevrolet pickup was traveling westbound at Road N. A 13-year-old juvenile male from Hooker was driving, OHP said.

Both vehicles entered the intersection, according to OHP, and the pickup struck the left front tire of the sprayer.

Miguel Navaratte, 19, of Liberal, a passenger of the pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup was pinned in the pickup for 25 minutes, OHP said. He transported to Southwest Medical Center in Liberal and was later air-lifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was last listed in critical condition.

As for the driver of the sprayer, he was not injured., OHP said.

OHP said seat belts were not in use at the time of the crash because they had been removed from the pickup.
