LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Health officials in Dona Ana County expect to find mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus even though none have been found there so far this year. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that two horses from the same farm in the Mesilla Valley were infected with West Nile in late July and have since recovered. So far in 2012, two people from New Mexico have been infected with West Nile.
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The state Game Commission plans to consider changing how hunters can get licenses to hunt antelope in parts of New Mexico. The panel meets Thursday in Rio Rancho to consider proposals that would establish a licensing system for antelope similar to that for deer hunting.
LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - A former Los Alamos County official who claimed she was wrongfully fired because of her gender will receive $800,000 to settle her case. Diana Stepan was fired from her assistant county administrator job last year after filing a grievance against the county administrator. The EEOC later found that she had been treated differently because she was a woman and was fired for complaining about that treatment.
FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - A man who says he invested more than $1.5 million in a failed Kirtland hospital project is suing the project's promoter for fraud. The Farmington Daily Times reports that Michael Atchison's lawsuit claims promoter Bobby Willis spent the money on a luxury suite at the Denver Broncos football stadium and real estate. Farmington police issued an arrest warrant for Willis on Aug. 10. His lawyer says Willis will plead not guilty.
