SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico health officials say two new cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in the state, bringing this year's total to 28.

The Department of Health announced the new cases Wednesday. They involve a 64-year-old man from Bernalillo County and a 77-year-old woman from San Juan County.

Bernalillo County has recorded the most cases this year with nine, followed by six in Dona Ana County and four in San Juan County.

The other counties reporting cases are Cibola, Curry, Lea, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Sandoval and Valencia.

There has been one death so far this year. Health officials say that 76-year-old victim from Bernalillo County had the more severe clinical form of the disease, which includes meningitis and encephalitis.

Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches.
