STRATFORD, TEXAS -- A Stratford man is being accused of stealing about $20,000 worth of cattle from his employer.

The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) said 40-year-old Aaron Smith allegedly stole 22 head of cattle on three different occasions dating back to October 2011.

Smith, according to the association, was an employee of the victim where the cattle were stolen.

Authorities said the investigation into the cattle rustling began after Smith attempted to sell 14 head of cattle at the Texhoma Livestock Auction in Texhoma, Okla.

The investigation revealed Smith had stolen cattle from the same victim on two previous occasions, TSCRA said.

"This case is a perfect example of why it is important to always brand your cattle and register that brand with TSCRA," Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Special Ranger Ben Eggleston said. "Because these cattle were branded, we were able to confirm they were stolen and return them to the owner quickly."

Eggleston said the cattle were located because of the watchful eye of the sale barn owner and worker who noticed fresh brands placed over existing brands on the cattle.

Smith turned himself in but was released on a $10,000 bond. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
