Pope Benedict XVI’s announcement today that he would be resigning February 28th took everyone by surprise.

Bishop Patrick Zurek of the Diocese of Amarillo said no one expected the announcement. He has met Pope Benedict and has received a gold overlaid cross from him. He said the announcement shows a great humility.

"My estimation of him just soared because of that and also the humility that represents. It takes a man who’s very sure of himself."

The Pope said he felt he wasn’t strong enough in body to continue in his position.

Nancy Koons of Catholic Charities of the Texas Panhandle said, "I think this sets a precedent that will enable future Popes to retire or resign if they feel the job may be too much for them physically or otherwise, but I think it’s a good thing if that’s what he wants. But he certainly will be missed."

Greg Thompson at the Top of Texas Catholic Superstore said, "The Holy Spirit’s got it all in hand so I believe Pope Benedict. I love him but if he discerned this, it’s his decision and I’m backing our Pope."
