AMARILLO, TEXAS -- A recent speed survey conducted in Amarillo found that only 21 percent of drivers were in compliance with posted speed limits.

The survey, according to the Amarillo Police Department, was conducted on 21 different streets. The same survey done last year found that a higher percentage, 26 percent of people, obeyed the speed limit.

Amarillo Police will now be able to focus more on the speeding problem, thanks to a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation.

The grant will allow police to be able to fund additional work hours for officers. $150,000 is the total funding, including a 25 percent match from the City.

Besides speeding, officers will also be on the lookout for impaired drivers and seat belt and child restraint violators.

According to the department, a recent seat belt survey found that Amarillo has an 88.3 percent usage rate. The survey was conducted in four different locations within the city.

So far in 2012, police said 25 people have been killed in 20 fatal crashes in Amarillo.

According to police, nine of the crashes involved impaired drivers, 12 involved excessive speed and six of the people killed were not wearing seat belts.

The enforcement of these violations will be strict, police explained.
