AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas Veterans Commission has provided $3 million in grants to more than two dozen organizations that help veterans readjust to civilian life.
The funding announced Friday includes $300,000 to the Samaritan Center for Counseling and Pastoral Care. The agency serves vets in Travis, Williamson, Hays, Caldwell, Bastrop, Burnet (BER'-net) and Bell counties.
About $200,000 has been earmarked for the Lubbock Regional Mental Health Center. The Mental Health America of Greater Dallas will receive $100,000. The Salvation Army in Waco gets $50,000.
Fund director Kathy Wood says the grants are expected to help nearly 3,800 more veterans, family members and surviving spouses this year. Officials say 25 groups are benefiting from the latest grants n a continuing program funded by a $2 scratch-off ticket Texas Lottery game.
