Fresh off of a 12-3 record, a berth in the NCAA National Semifinal and a school-best fourth in the final American Football Coaches Association poll, West Texas A&M announced Friday the 2013 Buffalo football schedule.  Season tickets are scheduled to go on sale by April 1st

WT opens the 2013 schedule at Western State (Colo.) on Sept. 7.  The Mountaineers came to Canyon in 2012 with WT winning 57-20 as Carthel tied former Buff head coach Joe E. Kerbel for the most wins in school history with 68.  Carthel became the winningest coach in school history the next week at the 2012 Lone Star Conference Football Festival with a 40-10 upset win over then-No. 14 Texas A&M-Kingsville.  Carthel is 79-22 in eight seasons at WT and is 125-68-1 in 17 seasons overall.

The Buffs then will travel to Arlington, Texas, for the Lone Star Football Festival (Sept. 12-14) as the opponent, date and time haven’t been determined yet by the league office.  WT is 2-0 in the Lone Star Football Festival defeating TAMUK both times in 2011 and 2012.

The Buffs return home to open defense of their 2012 Lone Star Conference co-championship as they host the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce Sept. 21.  The game features Carthel against his son Colby, who took the head job at TAMUC last month.  The younger Carthel was the defensive coordinator for the Buffs for the past six seasons.

Traveling across the state the next week, the Buffs head to Texas A&M-Kingsville for the first game in Kingsville since 2010 on Sept. 28.  Homecoming follows against Central State (Ohio) who is scheduled to leave the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will compete next fall in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).

“Our Homecoming game will be played against a newcomer to WT in Central State (Ohio),” Carthel said.  “They should have similar tradition and should be talented like the Winston-Salem State squad we played in 2012.”

The Buffs played at Winston-Salem State in the NCAA National Semifinals on Dec. 8.  Winston-Salem State ended the Buffs’ magical playoff run in the national semifinals and WSSU lost in the national championship game to Valdosta State.

Following Homecoming, the Buffs travel to Tarleton State Oct. 12, followed by a home game against Angelo State on Oct. 19.  WT then dips out of conference as it travels to McMurry for the 21st meeting in school history with the War Hawks.  WT leads the all-time series 12-7-1, but the teams haven’t played since 1957.

WT then returns home for two of its final three beginning with the Annual Wagon Wheel game Nov. 2 against Eastern New Mexico.  Following that, the Buffs host West Georgia in the Gulf South Conference/Lone Star Conference 1st and 10 Challenge.  WT won at West Georgia last season 52-28.

The Buffs end the regular season at archrival Midwestern State Nov. 16 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

“The conference schedule will be tough again as we will be playing a tough home schedule, as well as a rugged road schedule,” Carthel added.  “If last season was any indicator, we definitely were road warriors as we were able to go 9-2 away from Kimbrough last season.”
