AMARILLO, TEXAS -- UPDATE: Professional baseball in Amarillo now has a new name, the Amarillo Sox. The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon at a news conference held by the Amarillo ball club.
General Manager Mark Lee, said that while they were trying to get a name near and dear to many of those in Amarillo it just wasn't worth the fight. The team was attempting to bring back the Amarillo Gold Sox team name from years ago, but it would have resulted in a lengthy and costly court battle, one that the league chose not to fight. They have instead named the team the Amarillo Sox.
However Lee, promises that when you come to see what he's hailing the greatest show in Amarillo this summer, "You're going to think you are coming to see the Gold Sox play."
The general manager went on to say the American Association is second to none, and promises fans will see baseball in Amarillo like they've never seen it before.
John Harris, was also named as the manager of the Sox, and was the Dillas assistant coach last season under former manager Brady Bogart. Harris is a Clovis, native, and has a long history with Amarillo baseball. He led the Dillas to the 2003 Central Baseball League championship series.
The Southern Independent Baseball League took over the professional baseball team after Reunion Sports Group lost its contract with Potter County in October for defaulting on several months rent.
The new team will debut this summer at the Potter County Memorial Stadium formerly known as the Dilla Villa.
