Texas A&M made undeniable progress from last season, fighting archrival Texas down to the wire on Thanksgiving and earning its first bowl berth since 2007.

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS -- The next step for second-year coach Mike Sherman is ending the Aggies' embarrassing recent history in bowl games. A&M (6-6) has dropped its last three bowl games and 10 of 12 heading into the Independence Bowl against Georgia (7-5) on Dec. 28.

The bowl bid has given Sherman an extra month of practice for a team that used a school-record 18 freshmen. It will also give A&M visibility in Louisiana, where Sherman said he and his staff are recruiting several players.

The only thing left now is getting A&M's first bowl win since 2001.
