ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have opened a three-game home series with a 7-5 loss to Seattle. Justin Smoak homered and had three hits for the Mariners against his former team last night. He was traded in the deal that sent left-hander Cliff Lee to Texas.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have a bye this week, giving left guard Kyle Kosier and tight end Jason Witten extra time to heal their sprained right knees. Coach Wade Phillips says Witten should play October 10 against Tennessee, but Kosier's status is more "iffy."

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans are regrouping after a stinging loss to Dallas reminded them of the work they have left to do despite their improvements. Coach Gary Kubiak ripped them in yesterday's team meeting, and players are now trying to look ahead to Sunday's game at Oakland.

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks have signed Brian Cardinal, Dee Brown and Adam Haluska just in time for camp. They'll be among 17 players on the roster when practices start today. Dirk Nowitzki opens his 13th training camp with the Mavs as the most accomplished player in franchise history.
