Latest local news, weather and high school sports from Amarillo

The high school and college football season for area schools begins Thursday, August 30 in the Pro News 7 viewing area with six high school games along with West Texas A&M opening. The fun really kicks in Friday night with 42 more games in the tri-state viewing area. Six more games takes place Saturday including four in Happy, Texas where it’s a day long six-man festival.

Fans of high school action can watch at doubleheader at Dick Bivins Stadium in the form of the AISD Kickoff Classic. On Thursday at 4:30pm Bovina takes on Panhandle. At 8pm city rivals Tascosa and Palo Duro will knock heads on the turf. Another doubleheader will take place Friday with Stratford taking on Friona at 4:30 with the late game featuring Caprock and Snyder. Tickets at the gate are just 7 bucks and are good for both games.

The 24th ranked West Texas A&M Buffaloes on the road to start the 2012 season. WT will play 6th ranked CSU-Pueblo in Colorado. A year ago, the upstart Thunderwolves came to Canyon and beat the Buffs. CSUP won 11 straight games before suffering a playoff loss. WT did not make the d2 post-season, but did win the Kanza Bowl for a second time.

Four more college games of interest on Saturday including E. New Mexico at NM Highlands, Oklahoma Panhandle State travels to Missouri S&T while Wayland Baptist plays a football game for the first time in 72 years as the sport returns to the school. WBU meets Monterrey Tech of Mexico in San Antonio. in the D-1 ranks, Texas Tech opens at home against Northwestern State.
