The #11 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M made short work of the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce in straight sets (25-13, 25-17, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at the WTAMU Fieldhouse “The Box” in front of over 400 fans in Canyon. The win lifts the Lady Buffs to 19-3 (10-2 LSC) while the Lions fall to 16-7 (7-6 LSC) on the season.
“We played pretty well in the first two sets then let our foot off of the gas in the third” said WT head coach Jason Skoch “We need to learn how to finish teams when we’re on a roll and not let teams back into sets.”
The win lifts the Lady Buffs to 33-7 all-time against Texas A&M-Commerce with WT taking the last 18 meetings dating back to the 1994 season. The sweeps marks the 15th time this season that the Lady Buffs have taken care of their opponents in straight sets.
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Kameryn Hayes with 11 kills followed by Stormi Lancaster with 10 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Lauren Beville led the way of four Lady Buffs with double digit digs with 15 followed by Lancaster and Lacy Hayes with 12 each and teammate Halie Harton with 10. Hayes registered her 11th double-double of the season with a match high 38 assists to go along with her 12 digs.
Beville’s 15 digs improves her career total to 2,123 which moves her just 27 digs away from Brittani Bell (2002-05) who sits in second place all-time in the Lady Buff record book with 2,150 career digs.
The Lady Buffs hit .292 as a team with 12 attack errors and eight total blocks on the afternoon. WT carried a .363 hitting percentage and 31 total kills into the locker room following the second set. On defense, Erin Dougherty led the way with one solo and three block assists on the afternoon.
The Lions were led by Rachel Robertson with 10 kills followed by Kayla Bond with six and Chelsee Hudson with five. Jordan Neal dished out a team high 25 assists on the day while teammate Michaela Spicer led all players with 21 digs.
Texas A&M-Commerce hit .105 as a team with 16 attack errors and five total blocks. The Lions struggled offensively the first two sets but rebounded in the third by hitting .143 as a team. Defensively, Neal led the way with one solo and one assisted block.
The Lady Buffs return to action on Tuesday night as they face the Aggies of Cameron University with first serve set for 7 p.m. at the WTAMU Fieldhouse “The Box” in Canyon.
