Former Heisman Trophy finalist tenders resignation for personal reasons
West Texas A&M quarterbacks coach Ryan Leaf has submitted his resignation, effective immediately, the school announced Thursday.
Leaf, who also serves as the WTAMU's men's golf coach, has been on a leave of absence from the University for personal reasons.
A former Heisman Trophy finalist, Leaf has served as the Buffs' quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons. Under his guidance, Buffalo quarterbacks have continually set school passing and total offense records. Current WT quarterback, senior Keith Null, has completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 3,812 yards and 36 touchdowns this season.
"Coach Leaf offered his resignation this morning, which I accepted", said Michael McBroom, WTAMU Director of Athletics. "He does not want his personal issues to become a distraction to the players that he has coached for the past three seasons."
"I wish Ryan all the success in the world," McBroom continued. "He's been a part of our family for the past three years and it's always hard to lose a member of your family. But we will move on and so will Ryan Leaf."
WT offensive coordinator Scott Parr will assume the duties of coaching the quarterbacks for the remainder of the season. Jimmy Jameson, former WTAMU golfer and the husband of women's golf coach Meredith Jameson, has accepted an offer to become interim men's golf coach, effective immediately. A national search will be conducted next spring for a permanent replacement.
The #9-ranked Buffaloes host #19-ranked Tarleton State this weekend in the 2008 regular-season finale. Kickoff at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m. CDT.
