AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The University Interscholastic League has named Cliff Odenwald as its new athletic director.

Odenwald has been with the UIL since 2007 and played a key role in starting the statewide steroid testing program ordered by state lawmakers. He also oversaw football competition for the UIL.

Odenwald succeeds Charles Breithaupt, who was promoted to UIL executive director earlier this year.

The UIL is the governing body for Texas public high school sports.

The appointment was announced Monday.
