Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame ceremony

The annual Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame ceremonies will take place Sunday, February 14 in Ordway Auditorium on the campus of Amarillo College. Three new members will be inducted along with honoring the top athletes, coaches and teams from 2009.

Hall of Fame Inductees

1. Tod Mayfield, 149th member

2. Gene O. "Buddy" Cockrell, 150th member

3. Martha Sutton Pool, 151st member

Coaches of the Year

Baseball: Jason Patrick, Tascosa

Basketball: Krista Gerlich, West Texas A&M

Football: David Flowers, bushland

Golf: Rod Been, Gruver

Soccer: Charlie Johnson, Palo Duro

Tennis: Gary Marable, Canyon

Track: Craig Campbell, Canadian

Volleyball: Jan Barker, Amarillo/Jason Culpepper, Randall

Athletes of the Year

Dick Risenhoover Award: Bennie "chip" Woolley, jr,, professional horse trainer from Dalhart

Dee Henry Memorial Award: Sage Black, Nazareth High School

Big Play Award: Nicky Rowland, Nazareth High School. He hit the winning shot at the buzzer in voertime of the 2009 regional finals to send the Swifts to the state tournament.

Super Team Award: 2009 Amarillo High volleyball team, four-time state champion with a 48-3 record.
