AMARILLO, TEXAS -- ESPN Analyst Buster Olney calls Don Meyer the greatest coach you've never heard of. Meyer coached over 40 years, putting together 923 wins, more than any college coach in history.
He doesn't just win on the court, but off the court as well. In 2008, he was involved in a car wreck, when taken to the hospital doctors found that Meyer had terminal cancer. After losing his leg to the cancer Meyer immediately went back to work coaching at Northern State in South Dakota, until his retirement in 2010.
He is an inspiration to many and respected by every coach that has been in his presence, including Palo Duro Coach Jeff Evans. Kids Inc. C-E-O Jimmy Lackey met Coach Meyer, while seeing his friend the Northern State President last year. After hearing the story Lackey felt it was necessary that the entire Texas Panhandle to do the same.
Don Meyer will speak in Canyon at the First United Bank Center after the West Texas A&M basketball games Saturday Night. The cost to see the games, along with the Meyer speech is only $1. Lady Buffs tip at 4pm, and the Buffs at 6pm. Meyer who won the ESPY for the Jimmy Valvano Award in 2009 should be on the podium after 8pm. We'll have the full story, and hear from Coach Meyer Wednesday during the 10pm sports with Lee Baker.
