Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame honors athletes and coaches

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame had its 54th Annual indcution and award ceremony Sunday. The event gives local athletes, and coaches a forum to be appreciated for their achievements in 2011.

Three new members were also inducted as the Class of 2012. The 155th member is basketball great Leona Gerber Wilhelm. She helped lead the Nazareth Swiftettes to three straight state championships from 1983-1985. Then in 1988 led by Leona, her West Texas State Lady Buffs won their first 33 games, and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Title game, the only time in the Schools history.

The 156th member is the late Bill Spann. Spann coached the Dumas Football team in the decade of dominance in the 1960's. Compiling a record of 75-16-2 including a state championship.

And last but certainly not least in the 157th member. E.J. "Jeep" Webb. Webb a Tulia native played football for West Texas State. Shortly after coached four decades, thirty one of those years in Borger where he got to be known as one of the areas top girls track coaches. He is also one of just four Panhandle Coaches inducted into the Texas Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Austin. Congrats to all.
