WT Track impresses at Nationals

PUEBLO, Colorado – West Texas A&M’s Tommy Curry picked up three All-American accolades along with seven more honors by the West Texas A&M Track & Field team on a hot and windy Championship Saturday at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl on the campus of Colorado State-Pueblo at the 2012 NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colorado.


“I am humbled by the way we competed today, this group of kids has a lot of heart” said Flowers “In the face of some tough competition, we kept our composure and stayed within ourselves and thankfully the outcomes were in our favor.”

Curry, a native of Riverside, California, placed third in the 100m Dash (10.12) and fourth in the 200m Dash (20.51) along with a fourth place finish in the 4x100m Relay to claim three All-American honors on the day. The 100m Dash saw an exciting finish with the top three runners finishing with a time of 10.12, Curry finished with a time of 10.1193, just 0.0087 behind the winner.

“Tommy competed like a champion today, he is truly talented and the definition of a competitor” said Flowers “He came out today and represented this program and West Texas A&M to the highest level.”

The men’s 4x100m Relay team of Curry, Xavier Bennett, Tanner Dennis and Jerell Banks finished the event with a time of 40.70 to finish in fourth place overall.

On the women’s side, the Lady Buff 4x100m Relay team of Carnisha Simpson, Sarah Snider, Paula Bowens and Rachel King ran an impressive time of 46.32 to finish in sixth place.

The Lady Buffs picked up five All-American honors on the weekend for a total of seven points to finish in a tie for 31st place. The Lakers of Grand Valley State claimed their second straight outdoor National Championship with a total of 90 points followed by Lincoln (79), Adams State (59), Central Missouri (56.5) and Grand Canyon (41).

The Buffs picked up six All-American accolades in the meet with a total of 22 points to finish in 13th place overall. The Grizzlies of Adams State claimed the 2012 Team Championship with a total of 77 points followed by Lincoln (73), St. Augustine’s (54), Western State (54) and Abilene Christian (50).
