West Texas A&M junior defensive back Curtis Slater earned Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday.  It is the first weekly honor in Slater’s career and fifth of the season for the Buffaloes.

Slater, a native of Houston, Texas, and Cy-Ridge High School, had an impressive game in the Buffs’ 35-9 win at Angelo State on Saturday.  Slater had four total tackles with three solo stops to go along with two interceptions including an 85-yard, pick-six as Angelo State was knocking at the door midway through the third quarter with the Buffs up 18-3.  The interception made it 25-3 and pretty much sealed the victory for WT.

It was the first pick-six for WT since Caleb Randolph returned an interception 97 yards versus Incarnate Word last season.  It was Slater’s first interception return for a touchdown and his second career touchdown.  The interception return for a touchdown came in the red zone as the WT defense held ASU to 1 for 4 from inside the 20 on two missed field goals and Slater’s pick.

Slater then came up with his second interception of the game, this time returning it 39 yards setting up a field goal for a 28-3 advantage.  It was the first two-interception game by a Buffalo since Curtis Jefferson has two versus Central Missouri last season in the Kanza Bowl.  Ironically, Jefferson also is a native of Houston and Cy-Ridge High School.

Senior running back Khiry Robinson earned the fourth weekly player of the week honor for WT this season last week, while junior linebacker Taylor McCuller earned defensive honors following the win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Sept. 15.  Junior wide receivers Torrence Allen and Nathan Slaughter earned offensive and special teams honors, respectively, Sept. 3.

The 20th-ranked and league leading Buffaloes (5-1, 4-0 LSC) host arch-rival Abilene Christian (4-2, 2-2 LSC) for Homecoming this Saturday at 6 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
