TODAY'S FORECAST FOR AMARILLO
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Today's forecast
Partly Cloudy with Isolated Showers
49° | 31°
The next upper-level storm will impact the High Plains on Wednesday with a mostly cloudy sky and a chance for a few showers in the afternoon, mainly impacting the northern portions of the High Plains. Rainfall totals may range anywhere from .01-.30 inches, with isolated heavier totals possible. Again, keep in mind that most of this measurable rainfall will fall north of the Canadian River Valley. The rest of us will see a mix of sun and clouds with the southeastern portion of the Panhandle seeing more sun than clouds! That will help create quite a temperature spread with folks across the north struggling to get high temperatures out of the 40s while the southeastern High Plains see highs in the lower 60s. It will be a windy day for most of us, as 20-30 mph winds shift from the southwest in the morning, to the northwest by the afternoon. Some wind gusts will be around 40 to 45 mph in afternoon.
TONIGHT
Tonight's forecast
Rain/Snow Mix
30°
There might be a few areas of light snow or snow flurries Wednesday night and into the early morning hours on Thursday, but don't expect a "crippling snowstorm." That's definitely NOT in the works for Wednesday night. The upper-level storm system making its way through the region will be "moisture-starved" and there simply won't be enough moisture to produce much more than a "dusting" to less than an inch at most. Overnight low temperatures will drop to the upper 20s to the middle 30s by sunrise Thursday. Skies will be mostly cloudy to cloudy as northwesterly winds blow at speeds averaging 15-25 mph with some gusts upwards of 35-40 mph possible. This will create wind chill values that will hover in the 10s and 20s all night long!
TOMORROW'S FORECAST FOR AMARILLO
Thursday, March 11, 2010
Tomrrow's forecast
Rain/Snow Mix
47° | 30°
Hot on the heels of the upper-level storm that will zip through the area on Wednesday comes another storm system for Thursday. This upper-level low will reinforce the shot of cooler air we got Wednesday with more cooler air. Cold enough that we may see some snow mix in with any scattered rain showers that form... at least in the morning and again across the northern portions of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Again, light amounts of rain and or snow are expected with a "dusting" at best expected, if that! Of course, with highs on Thursday in the 40s, any snowfall will melt quickly, especially since the ground has warmed above freezing as well. Average rainfall amounts will be in the .05 to .15 of an inch range with a few isolated, heavier totals near .33 of an inch with the heavier downpours. Not all of us will see this rainfall as showers will be isolated. A strong northwest to north wind will be blowing at 20 to 30 mph with some gusts upwards of 40-50 mph possible throughout the day. That means that even though our temperatures will warm into the mid 40s, it will feel much cooler under the cloud cover, and in that brisk wind!
TOMORROW NIGHT: Partly Cloudy
31°
Rain showers will push off towards the east, and so will the cloud cover overnight on Thursday. Temperatures will fall into the upper 20s and lower 30s once again across the area. Fortunately, our winds will drop into the 10-20 mph range overnight, thankfully keeping our windchill values from dropping into the single digits. Don't get me wrong... it will be quite a chilly night, under partly cloudy skies.
EXTENDED FORECAST FOR AMARILLO
Friday, March 12, 201031°|57°
It will be another windy day on TGI Friday as Wednesday and Thursday's upper-level storm system continues to move away from the area. Strong northwesterly to northerly winds can be expected to blow at speeds averaging 20-30 mph with some gusts upwards of 40-50 mph possible all day long. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy throughout the day as high temperatures warm into the 50s by late day.

*****DON'T FORGET TO SET YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD ONE HOUR BEFORE GOING TO BED SATURDAY NIGHT!***** *****DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BEGINS AT 2AM SUNDAY!***** Just in time for the upcoming weekend, we will see less wind, more sunshine and high temperatures much closer to where we should be this time of the year. In fact, mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies should be enjoyed by everyone on Saturday as high temperatures warm into the middle 50s to the middle 60s by late day. Winds will blow from the northwest at speeds averaging 10-20 mph during the morning before shifting to the west and southwest at speeds averaging 5-15 mph in the afternoon.

*****DON'T FORGET TO SET YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD ONE OUR BEFORE GOING TO BED SATURDAY NIGHT!***** *****DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BEGINS 2AM SUNDAY!***** The bad news is that we will lose an hour of sleep early Sunday as Daylight Saving Time begins and we set our clocks ahead one hour before going to bed Saturday night. The good news is... that... it's Sunday! It looks like the timing of the arrival of our next upper level storm system has shifted back day, which means temperatures will be a little cooler behind a cold front that is expected to push through early Sunday morning. This front will shift our winds around to the north, and with a tightening pressure gradient, winds may become an issue. That 'Panhandle Wind Machine,' will crank it into high gear as 20-30 mph winds are expected with higher gusts upwards of 40 mph possible. In addition to the cooler temperatures and high winds... we may see a few more clouds around on Sunday.
Monday, March 15, 201034°|58°
Partly cloudy conditions will persist through much of the day on Monday, but with strong winds and some sunshine... our afternoon high temperatures may end up being quite pleasant in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Unfortunately, with 20-30 mph winds from the north, those 50s will feel more like lower 40s and even 30s for some.
Tuesday, March 16, 201034°|65°
Calm weather will persist throughout the day on Friday, and it sure looks like a nice ending to the work week! Temperatures will soar into the mid 60s with some folks seeing 70s again. Our winds look like they'll be tapering off into the 10-20 mph range! Expect sunny to mostly sunny conditions throughout the day!
