AMARILLO, TEXAS -- It's snowfall number two for the fall/winter season of 2011-2012.
Amarillo Police are out in full force as dozens of wrecks are being reported. Most of the wrecks, according to scanner traffic, are minor and without injuries. APD confirmed to Pronews 7 that 170 wrecks happened throughout the day.
Roads across the Panhandle have become slick as temperatures are below freezing. Temperatures throughout the day are expected to stay below the freezing point.
Texas Department of Public Safety is discouraging all travel in the Texas Panhandle. Troopers are busy responding to vehicle crashes and stranded motorists.
DPS also said that response time may be delayed due to the weather conditions. Motorists should take steps to avoid rush hour traffic this afternoon, DPS added.
Paul Braun with the Texas Department of Transportation said roads are "very slick."
"When the winds pick up today, it's going to cause the powdery snow to go across the roads and make them even more slick," he said.
TxDOT has had crews out since 2 a.m. sanding the roads, Braun said.
