HOUSTON (AP) - A Texas House committee will hear testimony on how a historic drought has affected the state and on whether agencies were prepared to deal with the dry spell.

The House Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing Thursday on the worst one-year drought in Texas history. Among other things, it will consider whether the state's water planning process is effective under such severe drought conditions.

This drought has been accompanied by record-setting, triple-degree heat that crippled the agricultural industry, resulting in $7.62 billion in losses, and forcing some water authorities to spend millions of dollars to ensure they don't run out of water. At least one Austin-area community had to truck in water after its well ran dry.
