AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Cold weather often makes more people feel a little sniffly and in turn, many people's minds turn back to another approaching season besides fall of winter -- flu season.
Because there is no real set beginning or end to the dreaded flu season, doctors and nurses recommend getting those flu vaccines sooner rather than later.
"You actually want to get it before flu season truly comes because it takes a couple of weeks for the flu shot to take effect," explained Susan Driscoll-Bannister, R.N., who spent the last several weeks working at the flu shot clinic set up in the WalMart on Coulter in Amarillo. "Some people actually wait until November so it'll last a year, but it really is does last a year so I mean, they're going to be covered if they're getting it every year."
Driscoll-Bannister said she's seen more elderly people coming in for the flu shots than any other age group but overall, in recent years, fewer people in general have been getting vaccines. That's why, she said, there's been a big push to encourage people to get the flu shot (and other vaccines). With more places like WalMart, CVS and Walgreens offering quick in-and-out flu shot clinics, receiving those flu shots has been made a lot more convenient.
"We have a pretty busy life, pretty busy lifestyle so if you just have a few minutes you can stop by when you're shopping, get a flu shot," said WalMart Market Manager, David Craig. "At the same time, you don't have to pay if you have insurance. They can bill your insurance right here at the store."
Flu shots are encouraged for people of all ages. WalMart's flu shot clinic will administer them to anyone ages three and up. As usual, everyone should still take the usual precautions to avoid getting the flu: sneeze or cough into your shirt or arm, wash you hands as often as possible, and consider getting a flu shot.
