SPRINGTOWN, Texas (AP) - A North Texas school district has changed its corporal punishment policy to let male educators paddle female students.

The Springtown Independent School District last year adopted a policy that required a school official of the same sex as the student to carry out the paddling. Trustees on Monday night approved the change, which also means female employees will be allowed to paddle male students.

In all cases a parent must give written permission for a paddling. A same-gender school official must witness the punishment.

Two high school girls recently were spanked by a male assistant principal in Springtown, about 20 miles northwest of Fort Worth. The parents of both girls later complained that the teens were bruised.

Superintendent Michael Kelley has apologized for allowing the man to paddle the girls.
