HEREFORD, TEXAS -- A 27-year-old Hereford man was arrested Sunday afternoon on charges of Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Kidnapping and Prohibited Weapon.

Police said they received calls at about 4:20 p.m., Sunday about a white van driving recklessly in front of Dameron Park. Officers said they were told the van ran into a stop sign at 7th and McKinley Street and two males jumped out and started running.

One report, according to police, said one of the males was attempting to kill the other male.

Officers were able to locate 27-year-old Jose A. Almarez of Hereford, the man who was accused of having a gun. No weapons were found on him but police said a sawed off shotgun was later found in a dumpster near the scene.

The victim told police he drove recklessly in order to avoid being shot by the suspect. Police said the victim claimed the suspect jumped into his vehicle and threatened to kill him.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Almaraz was arrested.

Authorities said their investigation is continuing.
