AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal head-on collision that happened this morning on U.S. Highway 287.

Troopers tell Pronews 7 a Ford Mustang driven by 36-year-old Melissa Flores of Dumas was traveling south in the northbound lane. The mustang struck a pickup heading northbound head-on.

Both Flores and the driver of the pickup, 27-year-old Andrew Jared Swope of Amarillo were killed.

Swope was more affectionately known to us at Pronews 7 as "A.J." After graduating from West Texas A&M University, he joined our newsroom. He was an Anchor/Reporter and worked his way up to assignments editor. For the last four years, he had served as Executive Director of Class Four Winds.

A.J. had a passion for music and was often seen around town playing with his band A.J. Swope and The Last Train Home.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his wife, Wendi. A.J.  will always hold a special spot in the Pronews 7 family
