AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Ten years ago today, the city of Amarillo lost one of its very own as the Columbia Space Shuttle disintegrated over Texas just moments before it was scheduled to land.
Amarillo native, Rick Husband was one of seven crew members that died on the aircraft. The shuttle lost contact with controllers about 15 minutes before it was expected to land at the Kennedy Space Center. His wife and children were there waiting for his arrival.
The Texas Air and Space Museum honored Husband by exhibiting some of his belongings. The exhibit included some of his NASA gear, his old car, as well as the shuttle training aircraft he would practice on.
Husband was survived by his wife and two children.
