AMARILLO, TEXAS -- 14 panhandle schools participated in Saturdays Regional Science Bowl competiton at West Texas A&M University hosted by Pantex.

"It gives students who excel in these areas a chance to show what they know," said Debra Halliday Science Bowl Coordinator.

While being quizzed in science may not be a first choice for some, these students enjoy it.

"It can be nerve racking at times, because you never know what the questions are going to turn out to be, but once you're out there, you're actually doing it, you can relax a lot more," said Erica Canyon Jr. High Participant.

Two teams that consist of four students each compete against each other. Some schools, like Canyon Jr. high brought in multiple teams. Participants say that success for them or their friends is a win-win situation.

"We might be split up into groups but that doesn't mean we're not one team, we're representing one school," said Erica.

"We're all representing one school. If our team didn't make it to the furthest then we still want the other team to do well too," said Tucker Canyon Jr. High Participant.

That reason along with others is why Pantex officials say they will continue to lead the science bowl

"They learned more about science, they became a close knit group they got to meet some students that they hadn't been acquainted with before and they also learned how to make educated guesses," said Halliday.
